Autumn Adventures on a Budget

As warm summer weather begins to fade and that chill in the air approaches, cozying up with your partner seems like the best plan. But, if you’re not in the mood to just Netflix and chill, there are plenty of fall date ideas perfectly suited for the season of autumn.

To really get into the fall spirit, you could head to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch.  There is no entry fee and you only pay for what you pick yourself.  You can even indulge in some delicious fall drinks and treats while you are there.  For Virginia locals, I recommend making the drive to Carter Mountain Orchard in Charlottesville, VA.  Between the gorgeous views, numerous events, and mouthwatering pies and cider, you can’t go wrong! But, if pumpkins are more your style, visit Ashland Berry Farm to enjoy a hayride, a $20 flat rate for all the pumpkins you can carry, and affordable Halloween haunt nights. After your trip to Ashland Berry Farm, take your pumpkins home to carve and decorate, or even bake a pumpkin pie. However, if you are still clinging on to summer, Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland, VA offers seasonal beers and an entire field of sunflowers for picking.

If you need a cinematic escape from the world, there is always the classic movie date.  As always, the best way to save money at the movies is avoiding the weekend price hikes and joining a rewards program. For example, Regal Cinemas offers 25% off candy every Monday and 50% off popcorn every Tuesday by using your rewards card when you purchase your ticket.  For a more retro experience, make your way to a double feature at the charming Goochland Drive-In Theater.  They show recent releases, host themed events, and have the lowest concession prices around. With the cool fall weather, it’s perfect for snuggling up with that special someone! When in doubt, you can always count on The Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA for inexpensive tickets. If you’re interested in a more dramatic fare, look into Richmond’s reputable theater scene.  Firehouse Theatre, TheatreLab, HATTheatre, and Virginia Repertory Theatre offer a variety of shows at affordable prices.

If you are really strapped for cash, the great outdoors are your ally.  Autumn is the best time to go for a hike and take in the fall foliage.  For the star-gazers out there, the peak of the annual Orionid Meteor Shower will be visible in late October and the Leonid Meteor Shower will be visible in mid-November. For history buffs, this just-right weather is great for a field trip to historic locations in Richmond or Williamsburg.  If you prefer to stay warm, challenge your mind at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  Free admission is available for most of the museum, a stellar collection of art, and insightful exhibits such as “Hear My Voice: Native American Art of the Past and Present” and the upcoming Terracotta Army display from China.

Fall is the last chance to enjoy warm weather for the year, so take advantage of it!  What are your favorite festive date ideas?  Leave a comment below!
