It’s coming! The weather that we all finally get to wear flannels, boots, scarves, and buy 20 more pairs of leggings in. The months that end the year are always overflowing with holidays, fun… and dry, chapped skin. When the cold weather finally rolls around, skincare lovers everywhere scramble to find the best products to save the skin they’ve worked so hard for. And honestly, it’s not a simple task. So grab your chapstick and keep reading!
First of all, chill with the exfoliating! I’ll agree, the feeling of literally scrubbing the dirt and oils off after a long day of wearing makeup is the best part of my day. Although exfoliating can really help your skin, ease up a bit during the colder months. Exfoliating too much can strip your skin of the oils it needs to provide more moisture for your skin! This including face masks- especially stronger ones, like your magic charcoal mask.
As everyone preaches (myself included) about a healthy diet, it’s even more important in the colder months. Since so many healthy, yummy foods are in season, take advantage of it! Pumpkins, pomegranates, squash, and so many other foods help your skin stay full of antioxidants, keeping it looking young and fresh.
As much as you want to crank up the heat, especially with the water in your shower, try and stick to cooler (but still warm) water! The heat will make your skin even drier than it was before! Not allowing your skin to soak up the moisture that cold water provides, is essentially leaving your skin out to dry. After showering, be sure you aren’t rubbing your skin to dry it, be more gentle! Your skin is at it’s most vulnerable, treat it with love. While your skin is still damp, apply a gentle body lotion, and try to stay away from harsh scents as well. While on the topic of lotion, make sure to keep lotion in your purse at all times for your hands, feet, etc. Giving them a little extra TLC never hurt anyone!
Along with your lotion, keep as many tubes of chapstick as you can hold, not to be dramatic. You can never go wrong with Burt’s Bees, Smith’s, or my personal favorite Glossier’s Balm Dotcom. Keeping chapstick with you at all times will make sure your lips stay kissable all day. I wish you the best of luck as you fall into the hellhole that is skincare in cold weather. May the odds be ever in your favor.
